Minnesota DOC Release Destinations
A Minnesota prison exit usually starts a community phase rather than ending the sentence. Current Status may read supervised release, intensive supervised release, conditional release, or another DOC status. A field office or district can replace the prison as the listed location. That means the person has left institutional custody but remains committed to the Commissioner of Corrections. Expiration or final discharge is a later event that ends DOC jurisdiction, unless another sentence or authority applies.
No state correctional facility sits in Pennington County. A county resident committed to MNDOC can be placed at a prison elsewhere in Minnesota. After prison, the record may identify the Thief River Falls District or another office based on the supervision plan. The county jail search is no longer the right locator once a transfer to DOC occurs. Use the MNDOC record for the state commitment, and use Sheriff data only for the earlier Pennington booking or transfer.
Search Minnesota DOC Release Records
The MNDOC Public Viewer covers adults who remain under DOC jurisdiction, whether incarcerated or living in the community. An MNDOC Offender ID is the most precise key. A name search can work when the ID is unknown, but compare the date of birth and aliases before accepting a match. The detail record must be read as a set of fields, not as a single release label.

- Read Current Status and its effective date first.
- Check whether the location is a prison or field office.
- Separate Anticipated Release Date from Expiration Date.
- Record the district and agent for community supervision.
- Contact the facility or Records Management when a date needs explanation.
A community status effective date is strong public evidence that the prison phase ended. A future Anticipated Release Date paired with a prison location means the person is still shown in institutional custody. If no record appears after a sentence may have expired, do not infer that there was never a DOC commitment. Request the historical state record.
Minnesota DOC Release Fields
The Public Viewer presents fields that answer different questions. Current Status describes the present phase under MNDOC. Its effective date marks when that displayed status began. Anticipated Release Date is a forecast for an institutional exit. Expiration Date is the expected end of the sentence or DOC jurisdiction. Treating those two dates as the same can put a person in the wrong phase by months or years.

The detail may also show aliases, sentence date, highest-ranked offense, and court-file numbers. Those help connect the DOC record to Minnesota Court Records Online. They do not replace the status fields.
Minnesota DOC Search Screen
The official Minnesota DOC Public Viewer search form is the correct first screen for a Pennington County resident committed to state corrections.
The form routes a search into the statewide system. It does not mean a prison is located in Pennington County, and it does not include every person whose state sentence has fully expired. Open a match and verify the status-effective date before describing any release.

Minnesota DOC Release Requests
MNDOC directs detailed or historical requests to Records Management. This is the sound route when a fully discharged person no longer appears, a date needs context, or an existing custody history is needed. Identify the person by full name and MNDOC ID when known. Ask for existing custody-status history, actual confinement release date, release type or status, expiration or discharge date, and any other precisely named record.

DOC need not create new data, calculate a new answer, or rearrange its files. Inspection is free. Copies may be charged at the statutory per-page rate for small paper requests or at actual retrieval, copying, and delivery cost as allowed. Corrections and security classifications can result in redaction. A DOC response concerns the state commitment, not the precise release time from an unrelated Pennington County Jail booking.
MNDOC also publishes a data-accuracy or completeness challenge process for a person who believes state data is wrong. The challenge should name the exact field, explain the claimed error, attach support, describe the requested correction, and provide contact details. DOC responds in writing. This route can address a wrong status-effective date or incomplete field, but it does not remove accurate public data merely because the information is unfavorable. An error in the Pennington County roster belongs first with Sheriff Records.
Minnesota Prison Release Framework
Minnesota's ordinary determinate felony structure divides the sentence into a minimum imprisonment term of two-thirds and a maximum supervised-release term of one-third under Minn. Stat. §244.101. The prison exit at the baseline point begins the community portion. It does not erase the remaining part of the sentence. Special offenses, conditional-release terms, disciplinary confinement, court changes, holds, and other rules can affect a specific record.
Earned Incentive Release may shift more time from prison to the community portion for eligible people. Under Minn. Stat. §244.44, credit can total up to 17 percent of the executed sentence but cannot reduce imprisonment below one-half. It does not reduce the total sentence. Exclusions apply, and implementation is phased. Do not subtract a flat percentage from the Public Viewer's Anticipated Release Date.

Minnesota Prison Release Notices
Minnesota separates county-jail and state-prison notifications. VINE covers participating county jails and detention facilities, including the Pennington jail channel. It does not cover MNDOC prisons. Minnesota Haven is the DOC prison notification route. A person who moved from Pennington County Jail to state prison may require a VINE registration for the county event and a separate Haven request for later prison notices.
The MNDOC Victim Assistance Program can provide notices that include a release notice, conditional or final release, agent assignment, expiration, and supervision changes. The form may be sent to victimassistance.doc@state.mn.us or mailed to 1450 Energy Park Drive, Suite 200, St. Paul, MN 55108. The program number is 800-657-3830. Email or U.S. mail is used for regular notices, while telephone is reserved for escape notification.
This split is important for release confirmation. A VINE county event does not narrate the later prison sentence. Haven is not a public historical locator. Pair the correct notification system with the Public Viewer or a Records Management response.
Confirm Minnesota DOC Discharge
Start with the last known custodian. If Pennington Sheriff data shows transfer to MNDOC, preserve the transfer record, then search the state ID. If Current Status names a correctional facility, the person remains shown in prison. If it names a field office and supervised release, the institutional phase ended on the status-effective date while DOC control continues. If the state record no longer appears, use Records Management and the court file.
A durable conclusion uses MNDOC's own terms. State that the person is incarcerated at the listed facility, under supervised release as of the listed date, at a field office, expired from DOC jurisdiction, or shown as discharged in a records response. The Pennington County post-release supervision page gives the local office route when the Public Viewer points back to the Thief River Falls District. Do not turn an anticipated date into an actual exit or a supervision status into unconditional freedom.
If an Anticipated Release Date has passed but the current status still names a prison, contact the facility or Central Records. Sentence recalculation, jail credit, consecutive terms, amended judgments, disciplinary confinement, earned-credit changes, revocation, conditional-release rules, and holds can alter the forecast. The public viewer should not be used to perform a personal sentence calculation from a court summary. The present status and its effective date are stronger evidence of the current phase.
